I grew up around the Howard County courthouse where my father was District Attorney, and where I later tried cases. I argued appellate cases in the unique and beautiful Eastland courthouse and later presided as District Judge in five courthouses around Central Texas. But my favorite courthouse burned.
Although I loved them all, the Mason County courthouse was my favorite of all, until one night the beautiful courthouse was torched by a cowardly arsonist. A courthouse ablaze is notable in any town but in the small town of Mason it was noticeable and impactful — still is.
While not too functional for the 21st century, it had a charm that none of the others possessed. It was warm, compact, and the woods drew you in with the smell of over 100 years of arguments, deliberations and decisions.
